Stuck!

Stuck!

Yesterday morning, the Commander opened the garage door and went out to his car and headed off to church.  I heard him get into his car and within just a few seconds, I heard a LOUD sound.  It was sort of a cross between a generator explosion and a balloon popping.  I ran to the front door and opened it up, fully expecting to see that he’d backed out of the driveway and someone had broadsided him.  Nope.  I didn’t see any sign of him.  Hmmm!  OK, I thought maybe he’d made it down to the bottom of our hill and someone had hit him at the stop sign, which is just around the bend from the house.  I actually walked over to the phone and waited for his call.  Nothing!  Eventually I figured out that he must have been ok and maybe a transformer in the neighborhood had blown but obviously not one generating our power because we still had electricity.

Within the hour, I was ready to head out to church myself.  I grabbed my things, fed the dog her treat, and loaded up the car.  I hit the garage door opener and … nothing!  Well, it DID open about 6 inches and then it slowly sank down.  I tried it 5-6 times but it just wouldn’t open.  Grrrr!  OK, so I went over to the cord and popped it off the opener rail and went to lift it myself.  First I tried just grabbing one of the joint hardware pieces but all that accomplished was to make my hands all greasy.

I went inside, washed my hands, and grabbed some paper towels and went back to the garage door.  This time I tried the latch at the bottom and gave it a good pull.  Nothing!  I couldn’t even budge it.  I tried, I really did but it would not budge.  I had to end up texting my hubby to tell him that I’d be staying home and why.

The culprit

The culprit

He told me that he suspected one of the springs might have broken and, sure enough, when he got home and investigated, this is what he found.  The spring on the right was busted.  He tried to get the door open on his own steam but he couldn’t budge it either.  My little Prius was not going anywhere.

Stuck Home Again

Stuck Home Again

I couldn’t believe it!  Here I’d been stuck at the house for almost two weeks with the remodeling going on and now this had to happen after I had finally gained my freedom back.  Once again I found myself facing the prospect of waiting on a service provider.

About 5:30 p.m. yesterday, I stopped dead in my tracks and had a “eureka” moment.  Wow!  That had to be what the noise was in the morning.  It must have been the sound of the spring snapping.  No wonder I heard it within just a few seconds of the garage door closing.  I told the Commander my suspicions and he gave me a look that said, “You’re just now figuring that out?”  Hey, I may be slow but I get there eventually.

Well, I’m happy to report that the fellows showed up here this morning and liberated me within an hour.  I’m free to…go to that dental surgeon consult tomorrow.  Oh, wait a minute.  Drat!  There goes a ready-made excuse to avoid THAT little joy-filled experience.
