Kitchen Remodel Preparation

Emptying Cupboards

Emptying Cupboards

Our “mini” kitchen remodel is almost upon us.  The crew will be arriving on Monday to begin the installation of our new countertop, sink, and faucet.  They’ll also be resurfacing our cabinets and installing new cabinet doors.  As part of the remodel, they’ll be shaving off just enough of the end of the counter “lip” that we will be able to shift our gas range over enough to open the oven door without banging into the pantry wall.

Speaking of the pantry, they’ll be resurfacing the pantry door and molding to match our new cabinets, too.  Oh, and we’re also getting some pull out shelving in one of the cabinets.  Can’t wait for those.

In preparation for the crew, we have to empty out all of the cabinets and clear off the countertops.  We decided to push our dining table against one wall and put some things there and also bring out my sewing table into the living room for additional temporary holding space.  The Commander suggested putting some of the cabinet contents in big boxes that he could put out on the sunporch.  That was fine by me as long as I didn’t have to lug those boxes around.

The Commander quickly filled up two big boxes with my cooking spices and all of our cleaning items that are under our sink and hauled them out to the sunroom.  I hope they’ll be ok out there.  I’m not expecting any hard frosts this late in the spring.

I loaded down the sewing table with mixing bowls, crockpots, and assorted pans.  I just hope that Toto doesn’t decide to leap from the couch to the table to try to lick all of them.

By moving the dining room table up against a wall, we have a spot to put the dishes and there’s also room to plug in the microwave and the Keurig.  Gotta have our coffee.  That leaves the other side open for us to sit and eat.  I asked the Commander what we needed the microwave for and he said it was in case we wanted to make some meals.  I just looked at him.  Then I said, “Are you expecting that I’ll be cooking while my kitchen is all torn up?  Because I was thinking that we’d just get fast food or go out to eat for supper until they’re done. ”    I mean, after all, they’re only supposed to take 4 days so it’s not like we’ll have to eat out for a month or more.

The Cupboard is Bare!

The Cupboard is Bare!

We made pretty good progress but stopped just shy of emptying out the glass cupboard and clearing the counter.  That can wait for this weekend.  I’m just not sure if I’m supposed to clear out my pantry, too.  I think they’ll just need to take off the door so they probably won’t need the pantry cleared.  If they do, I guess I’ll be scrambling on Monday.  I am also not planning to empty out the cupboards over by the window since those won’t be involved in any of the work.  I’m just a little nervous about sawdust.  I guess I can ask them when they arrive if I should take things off the shelves.  It will be a fast fix if they need me to do so.

And that’s how I’m spending my Friday.  What are you up to?
