Kitchen Remodel – Phase Two, Days One and Two

Darn Wallpaper

Darn Wallpaper

Oh, our poor painter!  He surely has his work cut out for himself.  He arrived on Day One to begin stripping the wallpaper in our kitchen.  Well, the wallpaper is like tissue paper, it isn’t coming off easily, and it certainly isn’t coming off in nice strips.  It’s coming off in little tiny pieces, leaving the paper backing behind.

The painter also discovered that the previous wall paperer (not us) had apparently stuck globs of glue on the wall to help the wallpaper stick in addition to the glue on the back of the paper.  When our painter has gotten the wallpaper and the backing off, the areas that had the extra glue have taken off some of the dry wall, too.  He tells us that even though the kitchen was painted when the house was built (before our time), they must not have primed the drywall (gee, no surprise there) and there just isn’t much protection for that drywall.

Lots of Stripping

Lots of Stripping

On Day Two, he stripped and stripped the green wallpaper off the walls, leaving a fine layer of the paper backing still on the walls themselves.  He was pretty sure that Day Three would be much easier to remove the paper backing.  Uh-huh!

Tricky Stove Area

Tricky Stove Area

The stove area is going to be tricky.  He’ll save that area for last because we’ll have to manhandle the gas stove out of that tight corner plus somehow get that stove fan disconnected and removed so he can strip paper and paint the area.

End of Day Two

End of Day Two

Here’s how it looks at the end of Day Two.  I’ll tell you what!  I’m SO glad I’m not the one who has to strip this stuff off the walls.  What a pain in the rear.

Ready for Day Three

Ready for Day Three

On to Day Three!  I have to groan when I think that we have two more rooms to go before this painting/removing wallpaper job is finished.  I’m feeling undone.

YIKES!! Reminds me of stripping wallpaper off a bathroom in NJ that also had foil paper on the ceiling!! Keep looking ahead!! Mantra of “finished product, finished product-beautiful”

Oh, boy…I’ll keep reminding myself of that. In the meantime, I never thought I’d say it, but going out to eat every evening is getting a little old.
