Kitchen Remodel – Initial Phase Complete

Cabinets and Countertop Complete

The initial phase of our kitchen remodel is complete.  The cabinets have all been spruced up with new laminated doors and the existing cabinet structure has been laminated with matching laminate at a fraction of the cost for replacing the cabinets.  We have a new countertop and sink/faucet.  I’m SO happy to see that white countertop gone, gone, gone!

Here’s a closer look at the sink.  The faucet has a pull-out part so that I can pull out the end and fill up the coffee-maker right from the faucet without having to fill up an intermediary container and making multiple trips back and forth from maker to sink.

Waiting for a Paint Job

You might notice something funky going on with the wall behind the backsplash.  Actually, when our technician first arrived, I had mentioned to him that we planned to have the wallpaper removed and the kitchen painted as the final phase of our kitchen remodel.  He apparently took that to mean that he didn’t have to worry about messing up the wallpaper when removing the existing backsplash so we have missing wallpaper all along the backsplash area now.  But it’s all good.  Hopefully this just means that we’ll get that painter hired sooner rather than later.

Yesterday the Commander and I spent a LONG time putting everything back in the cupboards.  I mixed up things a bit and did some rearranging.  I also did more purging as we put things back.  I mean, some of these things I hadn’t used in years so why put them right back in cupboards to gather dust for more years?

Waiting for some staining

This is the pantry door, now that the laminate is up and the molding has been put into place.  The Commander is taking some of the extra laminate to the hardware store to get some matching stain so we can stain the white areas that you can see along the edges of the door.  He’s also going to find a new doorknob to coordinate with the hardware on our new cabinet doors.

The final phase will be getting the wallpaper stripped off the walls and then painting the walls.  We’ll replace the electric switchplates with ones that will go with the cabinetry and then we’ll be finished.  Soon our accent table ordered from the Amish will be ready and that will replace the big farm table that’s under the kitchen window.  THAT big table will go out on the sunporch for eating out there when the weather is nice and the new table, which is much narrower in width, will go under the window and not jut out into our walk space in the kitchen.
