Five Thankful Faves

I can’t believe that Friday came so quickly and here it is, almost dusk and I just about forgot to do my Fave Five post.  That’s not to say that I haven’t had many things to be thankful for this past week, especially if we stretch the week to include Thanksgiving.  Because I was at my daughter’s home for Thanksgiving, I didn’t have the chance to post a Fave Five last week but I’ll include the highlights in this post.

1.  I was so happy that my brother and sister-in-law arrived safely from Michigan for Thanksgiving week. One of the great things that they were able to do while here was spend some time with Mom Loose.  The first day that I took John over, she took one look at him and called him “Laura” but soon realized her mistake and we had a wonderful visit with lots of laughs.

2.  Enjoying Thanksgiving at our daughter and son-in-law’s home.  Laura and Jason hosted Thanksgiving this year at their new home for the very first time.  It was so nice to be able to just come with ourselves and several dishes instead of scurrying around up to the last minute trying to get everything done.  The kids were great hosts and so calm.  How did they do it?  And a special treat was in store for us.  Our son-in-law deep fried the turkey for us and did a great job.  It was incredibly tasty.

3.  Seeing the Thanksgiving “traditions” continuing in the next generation. It was so nice to see Laura fixing many of the same dishes that we have always had over the years at home for Thanksgiving.  Yup, we had Hashbrown Casserole Supreme and the ever-popular Green Bean Casserole and freshly whipped mashed potatoes, jellied cranberry sauce (ok, it might not be homemade but it IS a tradition), dressing made like mama used to make it, sweet potato casserole with the brown sugar and pecan crust, and pumpkin pie.  Laura also gave it some of her own twist with broccoli salad and a wonderful corn dip  and shrimp rolls for appetizers.

4.  Having our nephews  join us for the holiday. My two nephews were able to fly in for a few days to spend the holiday with us and it was so nice to see them.  They haven’t had much chance to spend time with Jason so this gave them the chance to get to know Laura’s hubby better.    There was lots of talk about hunting, guns, and football…all that testosterone stuff which gave us ladies a chance to pour over the newspaper ads uninterrupted in preparation for Black Friday’s sales.

5.  Taking the family pictures.  For years, one of our most enduring traditions has been the taking of family pictures on Thanksgiving after all the food and celebration.  This year was no exception and the only thing that could have made it any better would have been to have had our son and his wife there and my mom.  But our daughter-in-law is due to have our first grandchild any day now and can’t be traveling and Mom isn’t able to leave the nursing home.  Jason (our son) and Laura were able to join us via Skype for a nice chat and even got a tour of Laura’s (our daughter) house thanks to the wonders of laptop cameras.

All in all, we had and have much to be thankful for this holiday season.  I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, too, wherever the holiday found you and didn’t put on too much weight from all the Thanksgiving goodies.  We have to pace ourselves with Christmas coming up, right?

You had a wonderful Thanksgiving week! Isn’t it great when the next generation starts taking over the cooking? We skyped with my daughter and grandson on Thanksgiving Day. Gotta love technology!

I’m so late getting around to visit everyone. I was on jury duty all day yesterday.

  • What a nice Thanksgiving it looks (and sounds) like you had!!! I enjoyed reading your list of favorite things. Karen
