Communication Mishaps in “Me Old Age”

Time for a New 'Do

Time for a New ‘Do

I went in for a haircut yesterday and told my hairdresser (a young thing in her 20’s) that I wanted to cut it off into a short, short pixie cut.  As I tried to explain exactly what I wanted, I said, “It’s like Mia Farrow’s haircut back in the 70’s.”

“Who?” she said.

“Mia Farrow.  You know who Mia Farrow is, don’t you?”

“No,” she said, looking puzzled.

“Have you seen the movie ‘Rosemary’s Baby'”, I asked her.  “She wore her hair in a short pixie in that movie.”

“Never seen it,” she said.

“Well, Mia Farrow was a young actress who married Frank Sinatra.  She was in her 20’s and he was in his 50’s at the time.  When she married him , she had long hair and she just lopped it all off into this very short cut.  It caused quite a stir at the time,” I explained.

I peered at her and realized that she probably didn’t know who Frank Sinatra was either.

“Hmmm, ok, do you know who Emma Watson is,” I forged on.

Her face brightened.  “Oh, sure!”

“Ok, that’s how I want you to cut my hair.  I want it short like she cut hers several years ago.”

“Are you sure you’re ready for that?” she asked.

“Yup, ” I assured her.  “Don’t worry.  I’ve done this before over the years.  In fact, several days before my high school graduation, I walked into the beauty shop and came out with my hair all chopped off.  When my mother came to pick me up, she took one look at me and started to cry.”

“No kidding.  She actually cried when she saw you?”

“Yeah.  I think it was just from the shock of not knowing that I planned to do that but that’s how I am.  Pretty spontaneous.”

She took a deep breath and started to cut.  Before too long, she gave me a critical look in the mirror and said, “I’m so glad we did this.  I love this cut on you.  It’s much better than you trying to grow your hair out.  This suits you much better.  It’s nice and sassy.”

And that’s how we roll these days.  Mia Farrow, eat your heart out!

Thanks, Karyn. Luckily, I knew Emma because I enjoyed her in the Harry Potter movies.
