A Prius-C Love Affair

Love at First Sight

Love at First Sight

I’ve been driving my little orange 2013 Prius-C  for a month now.  It was love at first sight when I ran my hands over the little orange car in the showroom.  Ooh, it was just what I wanted.  Sporty, sleek, a fun color, AND it got great gas mileage.  Trading my big Toyota Sienna in for the Prius was a no-brainer.  Trying to convince the salesman that I wanted an orange one proved to be a little more difficult.  He couldn’t seem to wrap his head around that fact.  In fact, he kept on telling us that they had aimed the “Habenero” color at the 20-something crowd.  Hey, news flash!  Baby boomers STILL think they ARE twenty-something.  We still remember the thrill we got when we saw that first Ford Mustang with the racing stripes rumbling past us in the Sixties.  Manufacturers would be smart to remember this.

Back to my Prius-C!  Here are some of the neat things I am loving about my car.

The gas cap is closed!

The gas cap is closed!

1.  The mileage – this has to top the list.  You notice that the gas cap is closed in the above picture.  That’s because I don’t get over to the gas station very often.  I don’t need to make the trip.  Both my brother and I still text each other in delight about the great gas mileage we are getting with our Prius vehicles.  Gas prices continue to rise but hey, I’m not so traumatized because I’m getting 46-53 mpg around town.

2.  The comfort – Sure, it’s not a luxury vehicle.  It doesn’t have leather seats, heated seats, multiple automatic seat adjustment controls, (gets great gas mileage) or a sun roof – although I could have opted for that as an upgrade.  However, it happens to fit my physique great.  The seat is really comfortable.  I mean, I drove it from PA to South Dakota and back and the seat fits my lower back perfectly.

3.  The color – I’m really grooving on this orange color.  Let me tell you that I have NOT lost my car in any parking lot since I got it.  In fact, everywhere that we went on our trip, we seemed to have the only bright orange car in the Midwest.  Now, I am seeing more and more orangish (is that a word?) cars around but none wear their orange palette as proudly as the Prius-C (and it gets great gas mileage).

4.  The styling – This is a handsome little car.  I actually walk slower through parking lots just so I can savor the view of my car as I approach it.  What can I say?  I’m besotted.   Today I was telling my hairdresser about my new orange car and she insisted on going over to the front window of the salon so she could see it.  Once she caught a glimpse of it, she had to run outside and walk all around it to get a closer look.  She LOVED it!  I think it just has really nice lines with sporty little touches that give it that extra “oomph” that goes along with its color.

5.  Bug-Be-Gone – Yup, this car is so aerodynamic that bugs just FLY over the front windshield and don’t splat on it at all.  It is a rare bug that actually hits the glass.  I am still finding it fascinating to see those bugs head toward the windshield and then swoosh over the top of the car.  The salesman told us that this little car was designed to be very aerodynamic and this just confirms it to me.  When I drive, it’s like I’m creating my own little air tunnel.

Love the Steering controls

6.  The amazing electronics – the electronics in the car are something else.  I used the GPS navigation system a lot and it worked great.  I also listened to my podcasts and my audiobooks on my iPhone through the car’s stereo with no problems.  I really like the controls on the steering wheel.  It is so easy to answer my phone, make calls, program my GPS, and even tune into my Sirius channels all with the steering wheel controls.  I can also adjust the temperature in the vehicle by pressing “+” or “-” on the steering wheel.

Are there some things I don’t like?  Sure.  The visors could have been bigger and it would have been wonderful if they slid on the post back and forth.  I had to order a sun visor extension to help keep the sun out of my eyes when it is in certain positions as I drive.  I also find the positioning of the screen that shows your GPS and sound system to create so much glare during the day that I can’t see what it says unless I remove my sunglasses as I drive, which could create a driving hazard.  Therefore, I try to only do that when I’m stopped at lights or very quickly to sneak a peak.  For the GPS, I rely almost wholly on the voice prompts since I can’t see the screen because of the glare.  But that’s about it for my beefs.  (and did I say that it gets great gas mileage?)

It's a winner!

It’s a winner!

So call me crazy but I’m in love with my Prius-C.  If you see a little orange Prius ambling about when you are out on the road, give us a wave.  I’m sure I’ll be going slower than you but it is by choice, not because my car can’t zip along with the best of them.  Besides, sooner or later, I’ll pass you, probably when you’re stopped at the gas pumps.
